Ten years in the making, Sun Xun’s Magic Atlas is an astonishing journey through myth, memory, power and reincarnation. Guided by a magical star atlas, an apprentice named Xiaozhi travels across shifting identities and worlds including Luocha, a coal empire without history or memory where flight is forbidden.
Created through woodcut animation, ink painting, contemporary painting and Persian miniature, the film unfolds less like a conventional narrative than a dreamlike cosmology. Buddhist ideas of rebirth intersect with Northeast Chinese folk traditions, Tungusic shamanism, political allegory and imagery drawn from ancient Egypt and Cold War Europe. Its changing visual forms create a world that feels at once ancient, futuristic and eerily contemporary.
At once a spiritual odyssey, political parable and meditation on art itself, Magic Atlas resists easy explanation. Sun asks viewers not simply to understand, but to feel: to remain alert, sceptical and open to the mystery of images. The result is a singular animated feature that invites us to peer through the cracks of reality and glimpse the forces—visible and invisible—that shape our lives. (Chris Robinson)

Fruit de dix années de travail, Magic Atlas de Sun Xun est un voyage saisissant à travers le mythe, la mémoire, le pouvoir et la réincarnation. Guidé par un atlas magique, un jeune apprenti nommé Xiaozhi traverse des mondes et des identités en perpétuelle transformation, notamment Luocha, un empire du charbon privé d’histoire et de mémoire, où il est interdit de voler.
Réalisé à partir d’animation sur bois gravé, de peinture à l’encre, de peinture contemporaine et de miniature persane, le film se déploie moins comme un récit conventionnel que comme une cosmologie onirique. Les conceptions bouddhistes de la renaissance s’y mêlent aux traditions populaires du nord-est de la Chine, au chamanisme toungouse, à l’allégorie politique ainsi qu’à des images inspirées de l’Égypte ancienne et de l’Europe de la guerre froide. Ses métamorphoses visuelles composent un univers à la fois ancien, futuriste et étrangement contemporain.
À la fois odyssée spirituelle, parabole politique et méditation sur l’art, Magic Atlas résiste aux interprétations trop simples. Sun invite le spectateur non seulement à comprendre, mais à ressentir : à demeurer vigilant, sceptique et ouvert au mystère des images. Il en résulte un long métrage d’animation singulier, qui nous convie à scruter les fissures du réel et à entrevoir les forces, visibles et invisibles, qui façonnent nos vies. (Chris Robinson)
Sun Xun (b. 1980, Fuxin) is a Beijing-based artist who established π Animation Studio in 2005. Known for multidisciplinary animations, his acclaimed films include Some Actions Which Haven’t Been Defined Yet in the Revolution (Berlinale 2012) and 21G (Venice 2010). Recent major exhibitions include presentations at the TANK Shanghai (2024), Centre Pompidou (2024), Vancouver Art Gallery (2021), and the Solomon R. Guggenheim (2016).
