Film Programming

The film side of the OIAF is made up of the Official Competition, three out-of-Competition Panorama programmes, and curated Special Screenings and Retrospectives.

Official Competition

The main event of the OIAF, the Official Competition features both short and feature-length animated works selected from over 2000 entries from 80+ different countries. These works compete for awards given out by an international six-person jury.

Panorama Programmes

The three Panorama programmes feature new and notable animated shorts from around the world, selected from among the 2021 submissions.

Animation Exposé and Artist Talks

Open equally to industry veterans and those with a passing interest in the art of animation, the Festival’s special presentation and professional development programs have wide appeal. “Making of”, “Behind the Scenes”, and “Meet the Filmmakers” presentations give unique perspectives on many favourite films. These high profile events complement screenings by giving fans the opportunity to hear popular artists talk about their work.

Past OIAF speakers have included:

  • Seth Green and Matt Senreich (Robot Chicken)
  • Caroline Leaf (The Street)
  • Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Coraline)
  • David Silverman (The Simpsons)
  • Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe)
  • Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)
  • David O’Reilly (Everything, The External World)
  • Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game)
  • Matthew Cherry (Hair Love)
