Adapted from Sarah Leavitt’s graphic memoir, Tangles follows a family as Alzheimer’s begins to alter, fracture, and finally overwhelm the life of Midge. Sharp, funny, and politically engaged, she is a woman whose command of language and strength of conviction have helped define her. Seen largely through the eyes of her daughter Sarah, the film traces not only the pain of losing someone who is still physically present, but also the denial, anger, tenderness, and absurdity that shape the lives of those around her.
Directed and co-written by Leah Nelson, Tangles preserves the sparse, hand-drawn intimacy of Leavitt’s book while finding its own cinematic rhythm. Its stark black-and-white visual language gives the film a raw immediacy, while selective bursts of colour mark moments when emotion breaks through the surface. A remarkable voice cast, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Seth Rogen (who was also a producer), helps ground the film’s shifts between grief, family friction, romantic discovery, and dark comedy.
Painful without becoming solemn, and funny without softening the disease’s cruelty, Tangles is a deeply humane portrait of family under pressure. It understands that caregiving is messy, love is imperfect, and laughter can become one way of surviving grief. (Chris Robinson)

Adapté du roman graphique autobiographique de Sarah Leavitt, Tangles suit une famille alors que la maladie d’Alzheimer commence à altérer, fissurer, puis finalement submerger la vie de Midge, une femme vive, drôle et politiquement engagée, dont la maîtrise du langage et la force des convictions ont contribué à la définir. Vu en grande partie du point de vue de sa fille Sarah, le film retrace non seulement la douleur de perdre quelqu’un qui est encore physiquement présent, mais aussi le déni, la colère, la tendresse et l’absurdité qui façonnent la vie de ceux qui l’entourent.
Réalisé et coécrit par Leah Nelson, Tangles préserve l’intimité dépouillée et dessinée à la main du livre de Leavitt, tout en trouvant son propre rythme cinématographique. Son langage visuel en noir et blanc, à la fois austère et expressif, confère au film une immédiateté brute, tandis que des éclats ponctuels de couleur marquent les moments où l’émotion perce la surface. Une distribution vocale remarquable, comprenant Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston et Seth Rogen — également producteur du film —, ancre les fluctuations du récit entre deuil, tensions familiales, découverte amoureuse et comédie noire.
Douloureux sans devenir solennel, drôle sans atténuer la cruauté de la maladie, Tangles est un portrait profondément humain d’une famille sous pression. Leah is a commercial director, and co-founder of Giant Ant, a multiple Emmy award-winning animation studio based in Vancouver, Canada. She has a degree in film from Emily Carr University, is a twin-mom and an open water swimmer. Tangles is Leah’s first feature film and first screenplay.
