Following his 2021 feature Chicken of the Mound, Xi Chen returns with Girlfriends of Father, an entirely solo effort recounting a personal account of the devastating effects of cyclical abuse on the developing psyche. In the vacuum of space, a gravely wounded boy escapes his father’s drunken abuse, finding solace in the company of his father’s discarded girlfriends. As the trio is pursued across a strange planet by robot pirates and laser-shooting spaceships, the wounded protagonist rebuilds his body, autonomy, and trust in others.
The immersive, somewhat nightmarish planet of Girlfriends of Father is captured with digital techniques akin to tilt-shift and macro photography, lending the otherworldly environment an intimidating sense of scale. The felt effect is one of disorientation and visceral fear prompted by the protagonist and the viewer’s survival instincts.
Moreover, although the film is completely absent of dialogue, Chen describes the project as “a long conversation with [him]self.” The world of Girlfriends of Father constantly remoulds itself like clay violently thrown against a potter’s wheel, with Chen’s characters and environments dancing across the states of matter at an electric rate. Girlfriends of Father’s cyclical storytelling prompts viewers to question the nature of fate in relation to hardwired generational trauma. (Maya Meloche)

Après son long métrage Chicken of the Mound sorti en 2021, Xi Chen revient avec Girlfriends of Father, une œuvre entièrement réalisée en solo, qui relate un témoignage personnel sur les effets dévastateurs de l’abus répété sur un psychisme en pleine formation. Dans le vide de l’espace, un garçon gravement blessé échappe aux violences de son père alcoolique et trouve du réconfort auprès des anciennes copines rejetées par son père. Alors que le trio est pourchassé à travers une planète étrange par des robots pirates et des vaisseaux spatiaux armés de lasers, le protagoniste blessé se reconstruit physiquement, retrouve son autonomie et renoue avec la confiance en autrui.
La planète immersive et quelque peu cauchemardesque de Girlfriends of Father est capturée à l’aide de techniques numériques similaires au tilt-shift et à la macrophotographie, conférant à cet environnement surnaturel une impression d’échelle intimidante. Il en résulte un sentiment de désorientation et une peur viscérale, suscités par les instincts de survie du protagoniste et du spectateur.
De plus, bien que le film soit totalement dépourvu de dialogues, Chen décrit son projet comme « une longue conversation avec [lui-même] ». Xi Chen (陈熹, b. 1985) is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist whose practice centers on the creation of fictional worlds shaped by contemporary life, personal memory, and speculative imagination. He has written, directed, and animated four feature-length films, largely as solo productions. In addition to animation, Chen works across short film, painting, and watercolor.
