How to Talk to a Recruiter
Written by Brooke Keesling
Brooke Keesling is the Director of Community and Culture at The Animation Guild. Prior to joining The Animation Guild, Brooke was Director of Animation Talent Development at Disney Television Animation, and before that she was the Manager of Animation Talent Development at Cartoon Network Studios.
Greetings! The fine folks at the Ottawa International Animation Festival have asked me for a few tips on how to make a good impression on a recruiter, in person or in writing, so here are a few tips. Best of luck!
First of all, be yourself! I know that this sounds basic, but believe me. Recruiters understand that you might be nervous to speak to them, but they are truly interested in getting to know who you are as an artist, and how you might be to work with on a crew, so relax and let your true self shine!
Know what you want to do. This one sounds silly, but I can't tell you how many times I've met with artists who couldn't answer that question. There are so many positions involved in creating animated content, so be clear about what you'd like to do. It can be more than one thing, such as "I'm interested in Background Painting and Character Design," but please don't answer, "I don't know! I just want to work at your studio, I'll do anything!" Basically what I'm saying is help the recruiter help you by being clear about your skills and desired positions.
Show a range of work in your portfolio. I love seeing an artist's personal vision in their portfolio, and I also love see that the artist is able to work in various styles outside of their comfort zone. Showing a variety of styles in your portfolio tells the recruiter that if they bring you on for one show, they will likely be able to move you onto another show when the initial one is complete.
Be clear and concise in written communication. Recruiters often receive literally hundreds of emails each week, so when you write to them, briefly tell them what you'd like to do at their studio and provide links that point directly to that type of work in your portfolio. If you already have professional experience, let them know that as well.
Keep your portfolio fresh. We all know that everyone is busy, so I'm not suggesting that you completely revamp your portfolio every time you write to a recruiter, but it's always a treat to see at least a few new pieces if it's been a while since the last time you checked-in. This tells the recruiter that you are passionate about creating artwork and that you're dedicated to your craft!
