| Born in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, in 1973. Worked at a game development company after graduating from university. While there, released the short animated film “She and Her Cat” in 2002, earning critical acclaim for its style. Attracted great attention in 2002 with the single-handedly created, fully digital anime film “Voices of a Distant Star”. His first feature-length film, “The Place Promised in Our Early Days”, was shown in theaters nationwide, enjoying a long theatrical run, winning many Japanese and foreign honors, and generating strong DVD sales. It is due to be released in more than 30 other countries. His latest work, the animated feature film “5 Centimeters Per Second”, had its theatrical premiere in Tokyo in March 2007 and was shown in theaters nationwide. |
